About PUIFORCAT

The title dates back to the 1800s, but it was Jean Puiforcat, a descendant of the founding family, who redefined the brand’s direction. By introducing architectural aesthetics into functional design, he established a legacy that continues to influence the objects of visual culture. Today, the collections bearing this reputation are far more than fine flatware; they are idols of aesthetic refinement from a golden design era.

What Makes Puiforcat Silverware So Captivating

What makes Puiforcat silverware so unique is its design philosophy: think clean geometry, sculptural shapes, zero unnecessary décor, and a strong focus on material and texture. Each piece feels almost warm to the touch, carrying a noble weight that speaks to its artisanal soul.

The majority of Puiforcat flatware is made from sterling silver (930–950‰), depending on the specific collection. Silver-plated pieces are also available, but all items are meticulously hand-finished to ensure precision in every element.

The brand gained widespread recognition through the exceptional talent of Jean-Émile, who transformed the house by integrating it into the fine art movement of Art Deco.

Since joining the Hermès group in 1993, the manufacture has remained faithful to its artisanal roots and singular creative idea, remaining true to its legacy while developing within a luxury framework.

Iconic Puiforcat Silver Lines

Puiforcat silver collections are both diverse and distinctive, reflecting the atmosphere of royal residences and ocean liners, the rhythm of Art Deco, and the clarity of precise constitution. Each cutlery or accessory collection features a clearly defined design language, often rooted in a specific historical period, architectural structure, or cultural reference.

The House has a pretty extensive lineup, but here at MDMAISON, we’ve handpicked the ones we feel really stand out, especially in terms of design concept and innovative direction.

  • Designed for the Palace and still used at formal receptions since the late ’40s, the Puiforcat Elysée cutlery set is a timeless masterpiece: elegant, iconic, and true to its name. What sets it apart is its classical ornamentation and exquisite hand-chasing.
  • In 1934, Jean designed an Art Deco cutlery set for the legendary ocean liner Normandie — a creation that would go on to become a coveted choice for high private tablescapes, far beyond its maritime origins. The form and balances of Puiforcat Normandie cutlery reflect the interior design language of the original ship, resulting in a collection with a truly remarkable and recognizable aesthetic.
  • Launched in 1928, the Puiforcat Cannes cutlery line was created with architectural minimalism in mind. It’s no surprise it still feels right at home in modern interiors. There’s a rhythm to it, kind of like the face of a modernist building.
  • Inspired by classic French design, Puiforcat Royal brings the grace of the Grand Siècle to the trendy table — complete with rich detailing, classy curves, and a sense of timeless symmetry. Such pieces are primarily selected for formal dining projects that emphasize classical refinement and standard table presentation.
  • The Annecy collection by Puiforcat Hermès features a minimalist appearance defined by strict angular forms and a high-polish finish. This collection is a practical choice for designers aiming to balance minimalism with strong optical expression.
  • The Puiforcat Phi tea and coffee accessories are crafted around the eternal mathematical harmony of the golden ratio, where consonance becomes poetry. These are refined artistic objects, combining fluid geometric shapes with sculptural presence, achieved through a blend of engineering accuracy and time-honored craftsmanship.

The Stylistic World of Hermès Puiforcat

The design language of Hermès Puiforcat spans a refined spectrum, from regal historical classics to the sleek purity of pared-down forms. Each collection demonstrates a distinct visual individuality and is created with specific interior and table-setting scenarios in mind. This gives professionals a wide range of stylistic options and useful concepts for their projects.

Key aesthetic directions:

  • Classic collections like Elysée, Louvois, Royal, Noailles, Molière Mascaron, Myosotis, and Narcisse work great for traditional setups and creating that timeless, historical feel at the table.
  • Historical Art Deco, inspired by Jean Puiforcat’s legacy, features silverware with architectural sensibility and modernist clarity — ideal for structured and formal settings.
  • Contemporary Minimalism and Architectural Design, reflected in collections like Euclide, Reflets, and Pilotis, features smooth surfaces, precise geometry, and minimal ornamentation, perfectly suited to trendy interiors and understated, luxury dining environments.
